Physical Barriers

Fences or nets are two ways to keep certain animals away from your flowers and gardens. For example, nets or chicken wire constructed to block a garden will keep birds, squirrels, and other rodents out. In addition, a fence can prevent certain wild animals, such as deer, from entering your yard.

There are several simple, homemade solutions that are great deterrents for rodents. Spices or foods with strong odors, such as black pepper or garlic, work well to keep squirrels and raccoons away. Fragrant items, such as orange peels or lavender oil, work well as deterrents for feral cats. Adding vinegar or coffee grounds to your fish pond can help keep frogs away.

The best way to deal with certain types of animals, such as moles, voles, and raccoons, is by using traps to remove them from the property. Traps typically consist of a wire cage that holds a lure of some sort to attract the animal. Once inside, the animal takes the bait, and the door will close. This type of solution does not harm the animal.

Ultrasonic pest repellants are devices that you can stake in your yard. The high-frequency sound and magnetic waves these devices project cause animals to become confused or irritated, which ultimately causes them to leave the area. Ultrasonic pest repellants can be solar-powered or electric.

Maintaining a beautiful garden doesn’t have to be complicated. Keeping animals away from your plants can be frustrating, but you can help keep your garden looking great using the solutions here.
